SLICE OF LIFE: INTERVIEW WITH EMILIA ESTUPIÑAN
Challenge: For this assignment, my team and I were tasked with conducting a five-minute interview with a Segovia resident who had no ties to IE University. We had to function as a film crew, assigning specific roles such as director, cinematographer, sound operator, and interviewer. The goal was to capture a "slice of life”—a deep dive into a meaningful aspect of our interviewee’s life within the given timeframe. This project marked our first experience with filmmaking, requiring us to work with two cameras, a clapper, professional sound, lighting, and Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. Navigating both technical and storytelling challenges, we had to balance compelling narrative-building with the practical aspects of film production.
Creation: We selected Emilia Estupiñan, a local nail technician in Segovia, as our interviewee. Having met her a few times before, I knew she had a rich and fascinating life story, making her the first person who came to mind for this project. Our interview went beyond surface-level questions, delving into her experiences, aspirations, and personal journey. The process was deeply collaborative, and because our team primarily spoke Spanish, we built a strong rapport with her. The connection we formed was so genuine that months later, she invited us to her daughter’s birthday celebration—an unexpected but meaningful testament to the impact of the project.
